First Match for Antwerp CC Juniors
Antwerp CC's fledgling junior cricket team played their first real match today against Royal Brussels CC at a cold and blustery Ohain. Our youngsters did themselves and their club proud, posting a great first innings score of 143 thanks to some powerful hitting in the middle order by team captain, Dallas. In the end, however, Brussels were too strong, chasing down the runs with 1 over to spare and eventually winning by 13 runs.

Our juniors play a special format of 20 over cricket where batting pairs rotate every 4 overs. Instead of being dismissed in the event of a wicket, 5 points are deducted from the starting total of 100, ensuring every member of the team gets a fair go. While both sides were very varied on this occasion (with kids aged from 6 to 13), young batters are matched with young bowlers (and vice versa), to ensure an even competition.

Antwerp Posts First League Win
We finally recorded our first victory today with a tense 2 wicket win over Gent CC. Gent won the toss and decided to bat first but never really got going. Although being reprieved twice in the opening overs, the openers fell quickly to Wahid and Paul. Bring in dangerman Ali Raza, who in our friendly match hit 91 off probably (no exaggeration) 30 balls. 4 4's and 2 6's later and he was gone thanks to a pretty bad ball by Simon and an astonishing catch by junior Farmiloe at backward point (the umpire Richard Eames said it was one of the best catches he had seen). it was a fully stretched diving one handed catch, almost Collingwood/Rhodes-esque. Our 4 front line bowlers did all the damage, sharing the wickets between them(Wahid 3-26, Paul 2-23, Ali 2-46, Simon 3-46). Eventually they were all out for 165.
After a good old Pakistani curry it was our turn to bat. Openers Kishor and Jamie did their job by batting for 10 overs and setting a platform for the rest of the batsmen to come. Ali, coming in at 5, got back to form with an impressive 28 before falling to a good ball. Our match winner however (apart from the 42 extras given to us) was Farooq, who hit 39 while batting sensibly and only lost his wicket when the scores were level. Wahid also did well to come in and take the pressure off Farooq a bit by hitting a few boundaries and eventually hitting the 6 to win the match, ending on 20 not out.
Before the match we had a proper warm up to get us into the zone and focused. By my reckoning this was the first time this has happened for a long long time and it really worked. This is something we should do before every (league) match. Of course this is only possible when people are on time. And everyone was this time. Let's keep it up boys. All in all a very satisfactory day which has lifted all of our spirits. Next up is the Arcadians at home on the 20th of June..

The Next Generation
We're into week 5 of the fledgling junior training programme at Antwerp CC and the results are already there for all to see. Juniors are taught a range of skills from throwing and catching to bowling and the various stock and standard batting strokes. This Sunday saw the introduction of the pull shot which was liberally put into practice in a scratch match during the second hour.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining in the fun on Sundays from 11am to 1pm, please contact Andrew Kavanagh at juniors@antwerp-cc.be.

Flying Start
Last week's loss to Optimists was a mere anomaly in what has been a flying start to Antwerp CC's season. The early cold did not hinder some great cricketing being played, much of which by the club's fledgling new players. Stay up to date with all the results on Antwerp CC's "Play Cricket" website: http://antwerp.play-cricket.com.

Rumst Cricket Ground a Picture
A huge thanks to all those who came down this weekend to assist in opening the clubhouse. The ground is looking excellent and almost worthy of hosting cricket matches. The harsh winter seems to have done the grass some good and in contrast to the usual minefield of an outfield at this time of year, the ground is looking completely flat. This is thanks largely to our "groundskeeper" who claims to have caught no fewer than 60 moles over the winter with his ingenious traps. The outfield will be rolled with the heavy roller after being cut a few times.
Sections of the clubhouse also appear to have been repaired over the winter, presumably by the owner. Although this will ensure the building remains errect for the coming season, it is an ominous sign that our landlord is serious about renovating the clubhouse, though sadly not for our benefit.
All water pipes have also been connected and miraculously, none had burst despite the severe temperatures. The sight-screens and nets have also been errected.

Toby is No Longer
Toby, the unofficial mascot of Antwerp Cricket Club, passed away this week. Having graced both the clubhouse and team photographs with his presence for over ten years, a heart failure eventually brought an end to this most fastidious club member. May he rest in peace.

Toby was a genuine stalwart of Rumst Cricket Ground, seen here sweeping the boundary
